How do I know if I鈥檝e been accepted into the Hoop of Learning Program?

You will receive an email from the Hoop of Learning Program Coordinator notifying you that you have been admitted to the HOL Program. 

When should I apply for the Hoop of Learning Program?

Interested Hoop of Learning applicants can apply for the program in the Spring semester of their Freshmen year. The sooner you apply, the more college credits you will receive!

What if I do not have my Certificate of Indian Blood or Tribal I.D.?

You must have a Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB) or Tribal I.D. to be enrolled in the HOL program. If you do not have a CIB or Tribal ID we will inform you about the other options available to you through our other Early College Programs (Dual Enrollment or ACE Program). 

What kind of courses are offered in the Hoop of Learning Program?

All of the courses offered in the HOL program follow the Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC). The AGEC is the foundation of a community college education in Arizona. Successfully completing the AGEC means all AGEC courses will transfer as a block to ASU, NAU and UA. The courses that Hoop students take are lower-division courses that are in the following categories below. 

  • Freshman Composition
  • First-year Experience 
  • Humanities
  • Social & Behavioral Sciences
  • Reading 
  • Mathematics

How many college courses do I take each semester? 

During the Fall and Spring semesters, Hoop students take one college course (3 credits). During the summer semesters, Hoop students take two college courses (6 credits). 

What kind of workshops are offered in the Hoop of Learning Program? 

The workshops offered to Hoop students vary each semester, but they are always designed to help build skills that are valuable in everyday life. While some workshops focus on academic development, there are also some specifically aimed at fostering cultural awareness. Part of the Hoop of Learning Program鈥檚 mission is to provide students with opportunities to explore and engage with their cultural heritage. Below are some examples of the workshops that have been offered in the past. 

  • Roots and Recipes: An O鈥檕dham Culinary Experience 
  • FAFSA/Scholarship 
  • Time Management 
  • Tackling Stress and Test Anxiety
  • Personal Statement Essay
  • TOKA Demonstration (A traditional O鈥檕dham Women鈥檚 Game)  

As a Hoop of Learning student, what do I have access to on campus?

As a Hoop of Learning student, you enjoy all the perks of being a PC student. You will have access to the following (but limited to) resources below. 

What are lab hours?

Lab hours, referred to as "study time," are a requirement for all students. Each Hoop student must complete 10 lab hours by  the end date of fall and spring semesters. These hours are to be completed in the library on campus after classes on Saturdays. Our ECP peer mentors monitor hours using our collective databases. Hoop students must scan the designated QR code when entering and leaving the library for lab hours to count for the day. 

Which Hoop of Learning Program should I apply to?

The Hoop of Learning Program operates at nine of ten of the Maricopa Community Colleges. We highly recommend that students apply to the HOL Program closest to where they live. The HOL Program is available at the following MCCCD colleges listed below.
