The Hoop of Learning Program was established in 1995 at ÍõÖÐÍõÁùºÏ²ÊÌØÂë. The program began its partnership with PUSD in response to concerns voiced by parents of urban American Indian students attending high school in the ÍõÖÐÍõÁùºÏ²ÊÌØÂë School District. In 2001, the HOL Program began to expand to include other Maricopa Colleges. Today, the HOL Program operates at nine (9) of the ten (10) Maricopa Community Colleges.

Encourage, enable, and create conditions that will empower American Indian students to complete high school and transition successfully into higher education. 

Program Goals

The HOL Program goals are to:

  • Increase high school retention and high school graduation rates
  • Increase American Indian participation and matriculation rates into college
  • Create the conditions for retaining American Indian students to reach their higher education goals
  • Enhance American Indian culturally relevant curriculum
  • Increase diversity on the college campuses
  • Strengthen external collaboration by establishing and continuing partnerships with American Indian communities, school districts, and other agencies

Benefits

 Students in the Hoop of Learning (HOL) program receive a real college-like experience alongside other academically driven peers. They have the opportunity to earn up to 36 college credits that are transferable to any Maricopa Community College or University upon graduation. Students are enrolled in General Education courses which are needed for any major and/or degree that they decide to pursue. Additionally, each semester Hoop students participate in workshops designed to promote academic success in their college courses. 

Participants in the HOL Program receive the following benefits:

  • Free tuition
  • Covered course and registration fees
  • Books
  • Cultural workshops and activities
  • Early start on college education
  • Opportunity to earn 36+ college credits upon high school graduation

Application Process

Step 1: Complete the MCCCD Hoop of Learning Online Application Form 

Allow 3–5 business days for the Hoop of Learning Program Coordinator to review and determine your eligibility.

Step 2: Apply for Admission to ÍõÖÐÍõÁùºÏ²ÊÌØÂë

Complete the MCCCD Online Admissions Application to be admitted as a student at ÍõÖÐÍõÁùºÏ²ÊÌØÂë.

Step 3: Complete the Hoop of Learning Next Steps Online Application 

This application requires the following documents:

  • U.S. Birth Certificate
  • Photo ID (high school ID, passport, or state-issued license are acceptable)
  • Certificate of Indian Blood 
  • Unofficial High School Transcript
